It was a very intentional attempt to appropriate the word, while also using it as a dog whistle. You can say you hate “woke,” while meaning you’re actually a racist.

I listen to a ton of hip hop, I was raised on hip hop, it just never occurred to me that it was AAVE slang
I’m just finding it hard to believe that you didn’t know woke was a black word, unless you don’t have much experience being around black culture.

I grew up in NY listening to hot 97 and power 105.1, went to city college where I was one of the only white kids. It’s more like I didn’t know the origin, I just thought it was like any other word.
