The Ministry of Justice is developing a system that aims to ‘predict’ who will commit murder, as part of a “data science” project using sensitive personal data on hundreds of thousands of people.
Is it gonna be a list of all the police and military?
No silly, not after they input race.
Reminder to watch Minority Report again… I don’t even remember whether that movie was any good or not
It’s great!
Can’t believe that movie is looking to become a reality in my lifetime.
Precrime is here!
Precrime will be here!
Precrime will have had been here?
Precrime was here!
Postcrime will be there?
Be ready to go to jail for shit you never did, and then be forced to watch the thing you never did for your entire sentence. What do you think you’ll do when you are released?
You’re assuming they’ll ever release you.
“I’m sorry; we predicted that, if we release you now, you’ll murder someone.”
That’s actually the idea. It’s not general precrime, it’s a decision support tool for predicting recidivism when deciding parole cases.
That doesn’t mean it’s not on decidedly shonky ground statistically speaking.
How about if we test it on politicians first?
US LEO are the real ones. In UK+EU they really aren’t murderous villains, many don’t even carry a gun.
And politicians don’t murder, they just fleece us.
Politicians hide themselves away
They only started the war
Why should they go out to fight?
They leave that role to the poor, yeahSimilar message, very different song:
Why don’t presidents fight the war? Why do they always send the poor?
Why don’t presidents fight the war? Why do they always send the poor?
Why do they always send the poor? Why do they always send the poor?
Why they always send the poor?
And politicians don’t murder,
I beg to differ.
570 recorded homicides between March 2023 and 2024.
Data on “hundreds of thousands” of people can’t provide the distinguishing markers to even have a stab at this.
It can reliably predict when people are black, though.
It can predict blackness with up to 63% accuracy!
Is 63% significant?
1/e is about 37%, maybe 1-1/e?
If I was clever I might have said 60%
Because 3/5
Eh that’s more of a US thing
a stab
I see what you did there 😄
And it will say people of lower economic classes and foreign origin are the biggest risk. Will action be taken to help these people? Nah. This is just going to be a technological excuse for some good ol’ repression.
Miniluv
I think I saw a Tom Hanks movie about this
Tom Cruise?
Pretty sure it was Tom Bombadil
Definitely Tom Brady.
WIIILLLLSSSSOOOONNNN!!!
Is Tom Cruise going to run the program?
Call it Minority Report
Because they will inevitably target minorities?
Because of the early 2000’s movie Minority Report that has this exact same plot and is starred by Tom Cruise.
I feel it’s time for a remake, maybe turn the three sisters into 3 AI computers?
maybe turn the three sisters
Two of the three precogs were boys, by the way.
I definitely need to rewatch this movie again.
Niooce.
It’s just institutional racism with extra steps
Oh boy! …Here we go, dropping a new Dystopia again!
So… What happens when it is wrong?
No it is never wrong, just super early. Just arrest people at 18 for crime they will do at 60 obviously.
We find out the guy running the tool has been manipulating it and is the murderer.
Touché, indeed.
Let’s call it project insight.
social rating here we go
Was that a Black Mirror episode?
Probably. It’s also reality in China.
No? Why are you spouting BS? The Chinese Social Credit System is basically the same as the consumer credit reporting agencies in North America. Except the data is handled by an authorian state instead of for profit corpos.
It’s also based on “law-abiding behavior” and “moral values” Source:
2.2. Finding the Social Credit System in a regulatory jungle
The broad range of policy goals projected on the system explains why what is generally translated as “social credit” is not a clearly and legally defined concept. Documents and discussions of the system contain a set of terms that range from financial creditworthiness (征信) to broader trustworthiness, law-abiding behaviour, or even moral values such as honesty and integrity (诚信/守信).
I don’t know if all of that has been implemented, but that does seem to be part of the goals.
Yes, it probably has its issues with vague wording. But MERCS also released a fact check a year later, attempting to dispel myths:
Interesting. Thanks for the link!
It was an episode on The Orville. Probably Black Mirror too.
Hasn’t this been tried before? and failed
This will only dehumanize and discriminate people that enjoy drugs or have been kicked down by society. It will never catch the people that are actual killers. The only ones that can be predicted are those kids in gangs with their machetes. But those are all a risk already.
I wonder if it will flag a lack of social care by the government as possible factor. Lmao.
