Antennas/custom feeds are a more powerful version of following tags tbh, as you can put hashtags in the included words.
However I agree, I also dislike when sites make it where you can’t see stuff until you sign up, or just make it difficult (as is the case here). If you go to many of these instances and add /explore after the instance name, e.g. sharkey.world/explore, you can get a better look before signing up.

I agree, unfortunately edits don’t federate from where I posted this, so I made this thread in place of that.
As the other person that replied indicated, *key is shorthand for Misskey and Misskey fork instances like Sharkey/Iceshrimp/etc.
There’s a bunch of them and since many of the instances with primarily English or other language (besides Japanese) people on them aren’t using Misskey (or any specific fork) it’s easier to write *key.
I should have clarified that in the OP, but I hoped the body text would help with that. My bad!
How so? That hasn’t seemed to be much of a negative for Bluesky, and its default interface doesn’t have a deck/column view like Misskey and its forks.
