  • Thank you. I didnt know about lenovo so that’s good to know.

System76 seems especially out of my price range. I haven’t bought a computer for 12 years, can’t believe laptop’s cost more now (even accounting for inflation) than they did back then. It’s unbelievable. Might have to work out if I want a good one to last a long time (which is risky) or to get a cheaper one and expect to replace earlier.

By thank you that is helpful.

  • I want to get into Linux and I need a new laptop. I’m happy to go secondhand but I actually want a half decent thing that can play some games, not the cheapest box I can put Linux on and use fake word.

Am I best off just buying a new windows laptop than I can dual boot? Or any other suggestions?

Windows is US$ 139.00. So I figured if I buy a laptop without windows it will be 139 less but I guess manufacturers get windows for like $20 so there are no saving anyway.

Edit:should probably add I’m from to UK I that’s relevant

  • My view is it’s pure hypeware until proven otherwise.

This isn’t Tesla hate from my side either. The general consensus from enthusiasts since the beginning is Tesla is way off the mark. But the latest self driving upgrades using more LLM tech has apparently been a big step up. By that I mean going from poor assisted self driving to good assisted self driving. Getting it from there to no driver behind the wheel is another matter all together. Maybe they had a single jump or maybe it’s a new path of consistent progress, I have no idea.

I’m not expecting much from Tesla. I would absolutely love to be wrong.

Expecting more from baidu, pony.ai and zoox more than Tesla. Hell even BYD with the Chinese backing it has might beat Tesla.

  • I was thinking about the US lately. Can’t remember why exactly maybe some friends popped up on my Facebook.

But I decided it actually wouldn’t be that bad of a place to live. If it wasn’t for the toxic work culture.

If they worked normal hours and had 20+ holidays it would be alright. Other shit annoy me and you would have to make sure you live in the nice areas but I could live there and enjoy it. But the work culture is an absolute no go. Wish they were like the Aussie. Show up do hard day of work fuck off for some beers. If the surfs good call in sick and end up seeing your boss in the line up. Work hard for a few months then decide fuck it and go to Bali for a weekend accidentally stay there for two months then decide you need to go back to work because travelling is too much effort walk into a job 1 week after landing home.

  • Especially in Europe there is a big question of winter energy demand not meeting supply from solar. That causes issues that wind doesn’t fully solve.

So I get that hydrogen could be an option to balance the grid over yearly time periods. Although I think batteries still look better.

But so much of hydrogen just seems like a scam

It added that all necessary equipment could soon be housed on a platform directly on an offshore wind turbine

Like why would you even do that? I don’t get it. It must go from kinetic energy to electrical then to the hydrogen plant surely. Why wouldn’t you send that electricity back to shore?

  • Humans can drive with just vision.

Tesla is doing it the hard way. Their model involves cars just having vision and driving the same as humans do. Humans can do it, why can’t computers? Seeing as they have more cameras than 2. In theory they should be better than human drivers. Once it is solved they could instantly drive anywhere humans can.

Waymo has taken an easier route and they have used a lot of detailed mapping with also an assortment of additional sensors. Waymo doing it the easy way has only recently achieved this. Turns out it’s really hard. Harder than everyone including the experts expected probably.

But with advances in computing and things like LLM’s Tesla is catching up. Who knows how long that will take though? I always thought waymo was doing the right thing so I’m biased.
