@Blisterexe Well so many businesses do this because they believe that the vendor will somehow charge less if they can reuse that code… but if its highly customised thats unlikely . it just becomes a case of pushing the costs down the road.
Not many postal banking businesses in the world
@yak So this is an interesting thing. Obviously the functionality required by the #PostOffice is to a degree bespoke - but not considering ownership was a critial failure of the contracting process.
Interestingly I think that there is something that every #creditunion that outsources its #corebanking and other IT should consider - How locked into that offering they are and what happens if they want to change? #Opensource #banking solutions offer the ability to both switch vendors and also customise to their requirements realitively easily - I’m not sure how many use solutions based on #mifos or #fineract - I guess they are still fairly new.
Now I can’t help them when it comes to #gotosocial - So perhaps others can chip in.
My thoughts were that with separate subdomains (or domains ) in Yunohost you can separate out instances for Family/Friends and the group they belong to but
I’m also aware that some #ActivityPub servers can run multiple separte instances for different groups while optimising federation - I think #takake did that - but again I don’t know much about that approach -
When it comes to the questiona bout being maintained. THat is a question a group I belong to has been considering since they worry about having to maintain infrastructure for a Sports Club and don’t want to get bogged down in keeping the lights on - Here I guess I think using templates where possible (which I think Yunohost is kind of ) and professional support for #Opensource solutions might come in handy . (people like #autonomic I guess - or just having enough people in your group to provide the support…
And they added:

interesting use case, but is it possible to separate friends and family members on the instance somehow? Because it sounds really good to protect all people who are close to you, but they don’t have to know what the “other chatroom” is about.
And the link gave me flashbacks, because I tried to create my own lemmy instance. I worked every day for a month on it to throw it away in the end. It had so many bugs and a few seconds after my instance was online, I had weird conversations in my database, which couldn’t be seen in the UI. And talking about the issues with the creator of lemmy was a little bit a pain, too.
After this, I’ve started a classical forum (flarum), because it looked like the fediverse is doing weird things, like polluting the database with garbage.
> Doesnt need to be Mastodon - could be Friendica or Gotosocial
I don’t get the concept of gotosocial? It’s like having a Mastodon instance with yourself. How do people find you?
I guess it’s not made for creators, but for nerdy consumers, right?
> Lots of ways to simplify the process - I use Yunohost gives me Email, >Nextcloud and ActivityPub for friends and family
That’s for sure, but there is still the problem that it must be maintained and if you already have a community, it would be really easy, but without a community or even people who know what this is, you have to do it all by your own. This could be stressful and depressing (imho).

gotosocial looks like it could work, but not for the whole family :D

One of the reasons I posted this is I think that it would be great if more people got in and supported the project
Yeah I am just getting involved in the project. I think that engaging with a full suite of open source products is a good way to show how they can be used by Credit Unions and save a heap of costs…but I also understand this is a process and sometimes you do need to be aware of what your audience uses. Its a process right?
@cmeu What kind of custom firmware do you use? Is that #openwrt - if not consider it.
Check with your FTTN provider - Are they using CGNAT or any other IP4 sharing tech - if so you will need to see if they will do you a static IP or otherwise except you from IP sharing.
At least outside the US most ISPs will let you use your own router with their Fibre modem but if not you need to know how to get their device into bridge mode or at least forward some ports to your own devices.
@Socket462 Thanks yeah. I think you are right. I have managed to have some success with extracting emails from #Gmail using #imapsync. I’ve done a couple of test runs but think that I have an issue with labels (basically I end up with emails in the All Mail folder but not in Sent or Inbox ) so I think I need to look at the options a bit.
Where should I / would you keep scripts that I create to run either one off or on a regular basis ? Should I create a folder in /etc/imapsync ? I have never really understood the folder structure of Linux despite trying to read up on it a few times.
@Krik Yeah no man page and /etc/imapsync doesn’t exist - I’ve also had a look at the documentation on the site (imapsync.lamiral.info/ but the documentation feels a bit free form - I mean Hey its free software I don’t expect anything - I have managed to get it running using the example config I found on the site and just creating a folder in a subdirectory of my ~/ and seem to be making some progress with some dry runs. I’m actually hoping to move emails into my email account running on #yunohost.
@gedaliyah @JustEnoughDucks When I got a notification you had commented - I thought it was about this - friendica.ginestes.es/display/…
@atzanteol @aubeynarf Clarification here There are ZigBee thermostats that are integrated sensors and switches where you can control the switch, read the sensor and control the set point both on the device and via ZigBee so they are controllable locally in two senses - on the device and with the home. There are proprietary Smart thermostats that may be local on the device but rely on external servers for any off device control. then there are Proprietary thermostats that are totally dependent on an internet connection to do anything - Its important to check
@callcc Would love to …cant wait for a true highspeed #paris - #barcelona or #paris - #madrid service. With better #crossborderrail we might even get to sit next to each other. #europeansleeper might even get us in the same bed. Imagine #London to Barcelona overnight. Id probably almost never sleep at home
I can report that our test of Briar worked perfectly… (Except it was accidentally called Brian at some point… ) I can see that sticking. - Our test was somewhat short circuited by #Ryanair’s decision to actually seat us together in an #exitrow for once. #extralegroom baby!
@Gayhitler For some flights i request a lap belt and ask to sit on his neighbours lap for the duration.
@slazer2au @3dmvr Yunohost should renew automatically. I got a renewal email from my Yunohost instance this morning. Check your cron job is running.
@Gayhitler Oh yeah … we also considered both sign language and private jets but the couldn’t agree on what type of either.
Of course #briar I knew I downloaded that for a reason.
@rikudou Its open source. The owner will die … the software can live forever.
