Good to know lol, thanks
Oh I get it, I guess I never heard it pronounced that way. British maybe?
As an American, this disagrees with my worldview. But I also don’t know enough about the British version to say your wrong 🤷♂️
I never watched the British one, and I don’t care for the American one, too cringey. Makes me sympathetic cringe.
I’m so confused. Drawbacks of a geared bike? As opposed to what? Flintstoning it?
I must just not be understanding what you mean.
I’ve ridden bikes with no derailer or gears, when you backpedal, you brake.
And I’ve ridden mountain bikes with front and rear gear changing.
I know there are super exotic driveshaft bikes, and electric etc, but besides that, what could you be talking about?
Could you elaborate? I’m dumb.
According to my pet peeve, this looks fine? I just scrolled past a meme that said something like “download a ISO” and I was like gah, no, it’s AN ISO.
I was thinking more like using an immutable or atomic os instead, like bazzite or bluefin. At least then you get regular updates, and core functionality is safely protected.
This actually got me into a car accident as a young driver.
I had just gotten on the highway heading home, rural towns. The gas gauge was broken so I had to count miles on the odometer to know when I was low, and I realized at that moment that I was desperately in need of gas.
So I took the first exit, and started looking for a gas station. I’m driving the speed limit, 55mph, and coming around a very large slowly sweeping curve I see what looks like a gas station up ahead on the left. There are no other businesses on the road. It had a tall sign out front. I didn’t recognize the sign, I was trying to read what it said, to see if it was a gas station or not. But I couldn’t read it. I was struggling to make sense of what I was seeing, honestly. A Martin Glass? An olive? I don’t remember all the things on it. But the point is, it was items, party items, that spelled out the word… party? It was a party store… and then I hit the guy in front of me who was stopped dead in the middle of the road waiting to turn left into a driveway.
I was so distracted trying to read that stupid sign, I didn’t even see him until the last second. I had time to swerve a bit, and I locked the brakes. I ended up hitting his back right bumper and crushing it in, a glancing blow that didn’t even touch his trunk. Just the bumper. He drove away no problem.
My car was a different story, it tore my lower control arm and snapped my tie-rod. Took out the front left quarter panel, hood, bumper, and headlight too. I had to get towed home, like 2 hours.
Technically my fault, and I got the ticket. But dang it if to this day, I don’t still blame that stupid sign. The Martini glass was the Y, I think the olive was the A? I don’t remember, I should try finding it again.

Yikes, kids are dumb lol.
I never grew up around waves, so when my brother and I visited family on the coast and we were playing in the waves, other people wouldn’t join us. We were going further and further out. Finally we convinced the guy to join us, and no lie, he said he jokingly said “ok I guess I’ll die too”. We didn’t know what he meant. All three of us got stuck in a mild rip current. I almost drowned trying to swim directly into it. Nobody told me any different. My brother and the other guy were stronger swimmers, they were ok. It all happened very fast. We gave that guy an earful afterwards, he was like “I thought you knew” 🤦♂️
Didn’t rip my hand off, but I definitely fell off one of those things, busted the back of my head open. I kind of… Fell backwards with my legs wrapped around the saddle, and hit the bottom edge with my head.
Split open like a mouth.
Rushed to the hospital. 23 stitches and 13 staples to close it up again. I have to have my hair cut a special way to hide the scar. People are always surprised when I show them.
I still rode those things afterwards. Kids were tougher back then lol, had to be 🤷♂️
I did not expect that. That’s a big company.
Just bought my FW13 last month. USA. It’s either perfect timing, because tariffs. Or terrible timing, because tariffs. I haven’t decided yet.
Love the laptop though!
I’m coming back to Linux after a hiatus. I’ve spent most of my time with the Debian flavors. Not afraid of the command line, but not an expert either.
I’m trying out Bluefin right now, semi-immutable atomic os based on silverblue, based on Fedora.
On normal installs, I usually change and install enough stuff, that when it comes time to upgrade to the next os version, I’m sometimes not able to without introducing instability or it outright falling. The former more common than the latter.
Let’s just say I got used to reinstalling and starting from scratch, especially if I experimented too hard and broke something big like my DE or drivers.
So with bluefin I’m hoping to leave everything that’s core, alone. I’m trying to rely on flatpaks, app images, and distrobox for everything else.
So far so successful. I’ve only got a couple minor gripes, some limitations of flatpaks. But I’ve also only been at it for like a week, so we’ll see.
I guess my point is, flatpaks have a place 🤷♂️
Just the other day, I was trying to run a CLI program, one I won’t name.
I’m trying out a new immutable distro, and couldn’t install it, so I said hey these new flatpaks are supposed to be all a guy could ever need.
So I downloaded an app that uses this unnamed CLI program as its core. It was a GUI app. And while it worked just fine, I also had very little control over what exactly was gonna happen and how it would happen. I wanted to do some specific things I knew the core program could do, but there was no way to do it.
Eventually I dug deeper and realized I’m an idiot and the CLI program can run without installing it or any dependencies, so it was fine to use natively. I was able to accomplish my task quickly and efficiently after that, happy as a clam.
CLI and GUI both have their place. I prefer GUI most the time, honestly. But having some CLI chops can be extremely useful at times.
Just wait until the AI assistant gets added 🤢
I think the implication is that they will switch to Linux

Thanks for this, but I apologize, I’m still confused.
You’ve described fixed gear, and geared, I think we now agree as to what these are.
But what is a single speed bike? I’ve never heard of it. Is it a geared bike, with only one gear, but still has a tensioner? So it can’t have hub brakes? Why would such a thing exist?
