  • I can’t speak to your town, but the leftist orgs in my area are organizing a number of efforts to help feed & house people, along with any number of events to improve the area for the people living in it. They’re also working on the political side to push for ranked-choice voting, challenging voter suppression efforts, etc.

Just because you’re not paying attention doesn’t mean they aren’t putting in the work.

  • Absolutely. I’ve tested this with friends, and we pick random topics or products we would never need or look up. Sure enough, we both start getting ads within 24 hours.

Got into a rare mild argument with my wife last week, and we started getting marriage counseling and dating app ads. Fucking infuriating.

Notice the plausible deniability that’s always put into ‘we are not spying on you statements.’ Zuckerberg will tell Congress, ‘Facebook is not listening on your phone,’ but that leaves it open for a third party partner to be doing the spying for them.

  • Does it need to be exposed to the internet? Putting it behind a vpn would be best.

Besides that, just make sure only the users you need to have access to ssh logins, and use keys for extra hardening. Keep your system updated. Limit that system’s access to other systems on your network, so if it is compromised, they can’t use it as a pivot point for the rest of your setup.

The other commenter’s suggestion of fail2ban is also solid.
